Digitization is a new buzzword. There would be hardly any aspect of life that is not digitized yet. From smartphone devices to smart televisions, smart homes, smart communication, and whatnot. You can find everything completely digitized. Technology innovations and philanthropists have made a huge difference here. The open source VoIP platform and other open source technologies have provided the setting stage for innovation to identify and develop innovative and cutting edge solutions.

However, in the past few years, a number of enterprise technologies have increasingly been launched and introduced. In addition to that, multiple other driving factors have affected the growth of open source based VoIP platforms. All this has caused several doubts and questions in minds of people that are still using open source platforms or thinking to use ones.

In this article, we will explore whether open source VoIP is dooming or not.

Behind the popularity of any gadget, device, or technology, there are some driving factors and we are going to test them to see the present and future of open source voice over IP platforms.

Why Open Source VoIP Platform is dooming?

1. Users

If there is a demand, there will be a supply for that product. The number and growth of users can define whether a product is popular or not. In the case of any open source communication platform developed using VoIP, whether it is a call center solution or a multi tenant IP PBX, there are still many users. If we take the example of one of the top 3 VoIP billing software solutions, ASTPP, which is an open source VoIP billing solution, it has more than 10,000 active users and every month 250+ downloads are registered. It means a number of users is not yet dooming for open source platforms.

2. Community

Any open source platform is empowered by its community and VoIP based solutions are not an exception. The fact cannot be ignored that community members of open source platforms are not as proactive as earlier. Of course, they still provide the resolution to the queries of community members or platform users. But, they often struggle in adding value by developing new modules or contributing to testing, etc. The major limitation is either time or interest of the community member.

Will this become the reason behind the doom of open source platforms of VoIP?

No, because almost all open source platforms have funding companies that manage and maintain the software and provide the required technical resources to keep an open source platform like an open source IP PBX solution or an open source VoIP billing solution up and running.

Concluding notes

Any open source platform is built on its users and community. The fact that the community is getting less contributive to the growth of open source platforms cannot be denied. But, on the other hand, it is witnessed that businesses have been funding the growth of these platforms.

As awareness about VoIP based communication is increasing among end users and enterprises, the number of VoIP consumers will increase. The benefits of open source VoIP will attract more users and it will become the rise of these platforms.
